DaVinci
Surgery
When medication and
non-invasive procedures are unable to
relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective
treatment for
a range of gynecologic conditions. Traditional open gynecologic
surgery, using
a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has
for many
years been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Yet
with open
surgery can come significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and
threat
to surrounding organs and nerves. For women facing gynecologic surgery,
the
period of pain, discomfort and extended time away from normal daily
activities
that usually follows traditional surgery can understandably cause
significant
anxiety.
Fortunately, less
invasive
options are available. Some gynecologic
procedures enable surgeons to access the target anatomy using a vaginal
approach, which may not require an external incision. But for complex
hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery
with
the da
Vinci
Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment
option.
Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci
System* can
operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and
risk
associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a
fast
recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
Treatment
of
Heavy
or
Abnormal
Bleeding
Abnormal heavy
menstrual
bleeding is a significant problem
for many women. It can cause pain, inconvenience, loss of wages, and be
a strain
on relationships. Endometrial ablation is a medical procedure that is
used to
remove (ablate) or destroy the endometrial lining of the uterus,
offering an
alternative for women who suffer from excessive or prolonged bleeding
during
their menstrual cycle but can not or do not wish to undergo a
hysterectomy. The
procedure can usually be performed on an outpatient basis, using a
light
anesthetic and involving no incisions. It is not suitable for patients
who would
like to have more children.
The Next Generation
Endometrial Ablation uses precisely
measured energy to remove the endometrial lining. It provides a safe,
rapid,
and cost-effective alternative to hysterectomy. For more information

Endometriosis
and
Pelvic
Pain
Endometriosis is a
disorder where the endometrium, which
normally lines the uterus, grows in other places as well, causing
pelvic pain
and other problems. Modern diagnostic techniques and a greater
understanding of
the sources of pain, allow the cause of pain to be addressed directly,
resolving this problem through a minimally invasive outpatient surgery,
and
sometimes medical therapy.
Ovarian Cysts
Many
women have
ovarian cysts at some time during their lives. Most ovarian cysts
present
little or no discomfort and are harmless. While the majority of ovarian
cysts
disappear without treatment within a few months, some can produce
serious
symptoms and need to be treated. Now, with advances in surgery
and
laparoscopic techniques, women of all ages can have their ovarian
surgery, as
well as other gynecological procedures performed in an outpatient
setting, and
with a fraction of the recuperation time required after traditional
surgery.
Tubal Ligation
Tubal Ligation,
commonly
called “getting your tubes tied,”
is a surgical sterilization technique for women. This procedure closes
the
fallopian tubes, and stops the egg from traveling from the ovary to the
uterus,
preventing fertilization. It is a relatively simple out-patient surgery
which
can be performed in a clinic, doctor's office, or hospital. It can be
performed
under local or general anesthesia.
Patients may undergo most, if not all, of these surgeries as
outpatient procedures,
requiring a fraction of the recuperation time of traditional surgery.
